Custom Windows and macOS software that keeps working, even offline

Some work still belongs on an installed program: shop counters, factory floors, and internal tools that talk to printers and other hardware. GOOD DEV builds Windows and macOS software around your real workflow, designed to keep running when the internet drops and to sync with the cloud once it’s back.

  • Windows & macOS
  • Offline-first
  • Hardware integration
  • Automatic updates

What we build

Point-of-service & counter software

Sales, receipts and queue management that keep working through outages and sync to the cloud afterwards.

Production & factory software

Record output, read data from machines or IoT sensors, and raise alerts when values go out of range.

Hardware-connected software

Drive receipt and label printers, barcode/QR scanners, scales and card readers.

Internal productivity tools

Purpose-built tools for your team, such as document handling, bulk data import or fast local file processing.

Legacy software modernisation

Move long-running programs (for example VB6 or Access) onto modern technology while keeping all your existing data.

What you get

  • Workflow analysis and a review of the devices you need to connect
  • Fast, keyboard-friendly screens designed for all-day use
  • A local database for offline mode, with cloud sync
  • Integration with your printers, scanners and other equipment
  • An installer and automatic update mechanism
  • Role-based permissions and activity logs
  • Testing on your actual machines and devices on site
  • User manual, staff training and full source code

How it works

  1. 1

    Site visit & requirements

We learn the real workflow, operating systems, machine specs and device models in use, then send a scope and free estimate.

  2. 2

    Architecture & screen design

We choose the right stack, design the database and sync strategy, and let front-line users try the screens before development.

  3. 3

Build & test with real hardware

We develop in sprints, ship a test build every week and connect to your actual printers, scanners or machines early on.

  4. 4

    Install & train on site

We install the software, migrate existing data and train staff, often piloting at one location first to reduce risk.

  5. 5

    Updates & support

We ship updates through the auto-updater, fix issues under warranty and add features based on real use.

What affects the price

Every desktop project has its own on-site conditions, so we quote once we understand your workflow and equipment, with the price broken down by feature. The main cost drivers are:

Feature scope and number of screens

A single-purpose tool takes far less time than software that spans several departments with many report formats.

Operating systems

Windows only, or macOS as well, plus the OS versions and machine specs used on site.

Hardware to integrate

How many printers, scanners, scales or machines are involved, and whether the manufacturer provides documentation or an SDK.

Offline mode and sync

How long the software must run offline and how many machines or branches need to sync with each other.

Data migration

The volume and quality of data in your old program or spreadsheets that must move into the new system.

Frequently asked questions

Desktop is the better fit when the software must work without internet, talk directly to printers or other attached devices, or process large files locally. If users are spread across locations and always online, a web application is easier to maintain. Many projects combine the two.

We design offline-first: data is saved to a local database first, so staff carry on as normal during an outage. When the connection returns, the software syncs to the cloud automatically and resolves conflicts according to rules we agree with you.

Usually, yes. Most devices connect over USB, serial, LAN or Bluetooth and use standard command sets. We check your device models before starting and test with the real hardware early in development. If a specific model has limitations, we tell you at the estimate stage.

The software includes an automatic updater. When a new version is released, installed machines download and apply it themselves, with no need to reinstall each one, and we can roll updates out to a few locations first as a pilot.

Most custom desktop projects take around 2–6 months, depending on features, the hardware involved and data migration. If the software is part of a larger system such as a POS or ERP, see ERP, POS and CRM systems.
